Acer, INC: Taiwan’s Rampaging Dragon Description Case Analysis Requirements: 1. Issue identification a. What is ( or are) the key issue(s) facing the company? – focus on only 2 or 1 issue (no more than 2) each issue the solution could be different – you cant get deeper into any b. Why this is important? – explain why this issue is important 0 needs to address it c. How does this issue come about? 2. Situation analysis: ( understand the internal and external environment) external environment can influence the strategy – if they have cash issues you cant say tthey should invest – should be viable a. External environment: economy, institutions, industry context (Porter 5 & PEST analysis) 3. Strategy formulation: (solutions) suggestions you have this solution is to fix the issue a. What is the strategy that you propose to the company? b. What are the implementation steps? Tips: Ideally, apply the framework, knowledge, theory from class to the analysis : support argument with a theory ( if you mention an idea then support with facts- case itself or own thinking) within the case Additional Tips : Framework: Three components 1. The time period of the issue and the environment. The orientation of the report is to tell Acer what to do next beyond the ending period of the case. Hence, the issue must be a problem or challenge facing Acer at the end of the case. Note that this issue may have originated in the past but remained all along. Or it can occur right at the last moment. Similarly, your environmental analysis should also be based on the current situation in the case (not current as in 2018). 2. What issue to focus on? The case mentioned many issues with Acer. You should select one that is important and urgent from your perspective. This is part of the exercise. Therefore, don’t ask me for the issue. As long as you can support your selection with convincing arguments and evidence, that is fine. 3. What strategy to propose in part 3? The strategy in part 3 is dictated by the issue you identified upfront. It is supposed to solve the issue. Here you need to think – hard – to formulate relevant and actionable strategies and plans that all aim to help Acer address the problem. Don’t be constrained by the 4 basic strategies covered in the textbook. They are generic categorizations of strategies of MNEs but may not fit with your current case. All in all, the guiding principle is to assume yourself as a consultant to Acer which is seeking your advice on their strategy, and the case as the materials Acer provided to you for analysis.
