Analyse a sequence from one of the films studied in weeks 1 to 6 of the course, cross-referencing the analysis with an accompanying sequence breakdown. Show how the filmmaker has given form to the sequence and how the filmmaker’s choices are made in dialogue with the wider project of the film. In your analysis make use of two of the following concepts: classical continuity cinema, intensified continuity, montage, parallel editing, alternation, off-screen space, ‘faith in the image’, ‘faith in reality’, the long take, slow cinema, mise en scène. Length of essay: between 1350 and 1650 words. The sequence studied can be any length you wish, bearing in mind that if you choose a short sequence you will be able to analyse it in greater depth and detail. Essays which choose very long sequences are more likely to produce a superficial analysis with significant details missing. You may choose any sequence from the film you are studying with the exception of those treated in the sequence breakdowns distributed in the lectures for weeks 1 and 5.
