Apply systems principles and ideas to an REM problem, or stressed environment.

Your focus might derive from a topical or issues-based interest, and/or a particular social-ecological system or region of interest to you, perhaps from where you have lived, or from your planned thesis work. You are expected to discuss your choice of topic with the instructor. This should, for example, include an introduction to the issue or region to be analysed, identification of relevant literature and other data sources and methods, a basic system description and analytic figures for the issue or region, and an outline of the final paper. If you focus on a particular social-ecological system or region you should emphasize basic descriptive data, a biophysical overview, a cultural/historical outline, a basic institutional analysis, an integrative system figure, and an outline of challenges and opportunities faced by people and ecosystems in the region.
