(1) What is your first reaction to the idea of “shaping” children? What principles are involved in designing children or modifying them? What ethical errors do you see as possible, likely, or inevitable?
(2) Does it matter by what methods a disease such as muscular dystrophy or Tay Sachs might be avoided—such as testing a fetus followed by abortion, versus potential new methods that might correct the related genes before a child is even conceived? What would happen if all disabilities determined before birth were eradicated? Would the world be better? What rights and responsibilities does society have in this selective birthing?
(3) Discuss how you think the cautionary tale of eugenics should influence how society pursues genetic therapies.
