Common Assignment

In part 3 of the assignment, you are being asked to develop “a theory of the case”, which is also referred to as the tentative assessment and case formulation. Basically, now that you have conducted your assessment and carefully thought about the process and content of that assessment (which you completed part 2), you need to address how you can use all of this information (which you have analyzed and synthesized), to develop an effective intervention plan. Then, based on your critique, discuss what changes you would make with regard to the level and type of information gathered. In your critique be sure to discuss the process in which the information is gathered. For example, what preparation and communication skills did you use? How, and from whom, is this information gathered? What tools were used (e.g., observation, the interview, prior records, a referral source, the client intake form, standardized instruments, visual tools, genogram, ecomap)? How involved were the client(s) in the information gathering process? Is the level of client involvement appropriate given your agency mission and the client’s presenting situation? Lastly, based on your critique, what changes would you recommend to the information gathering process? What is your rationale for suggesting these changes? Part 3 of the common assignment should be 4-6 pages long. Please include the following in this section: • What are your plans for intervening with this client (or how are you currently intervening)? How did your assessment and work with this client guide you in this decision? • Did you incorporate the client’s risk and protective factors in your intervention plans? If so, how? If not, why not? How was this information helpful to you in thinking about the client’s issue, and how you plan to work (or are currently working) with him/her/them? • How involved was the client in the process of deciding on the intervention plan? Do you think this was appropriate given your client’s capabilities and the purpose of your work with this client? (If you have not yet begun to implement the intervention, how involved do you think the client should be? Why?) • How might you go about evaluating whether or not your work with this client is helpful to him/her/them?
