Abstract

Is a very concise synopsis of the entire paper (150–250 words maximum).
Should be as detailed as possible and not too brief. (It is better to start long and edit down.)
Introduction

Contains the rationale for doing the research, why it answers an important question or addresses an important problem.
Introduces the topic of the paper, gives it a broad context, then narrows it down to the research problem, thesis, and hypothesis. It also explicitly states the research problem you will investigate and briefly states how you intend to solve the research problem.
Provides a review of the literature pertinent to the research problem being investigated.
Briefly states the limitations you will be working with and the assumptions you are making.
Is fairly concise and to the point.
Results

States the results but does not interpret or evaluate them. (Save that for the discussion section.) However, you may describe or explain results, as in the following example: “There was a significant effect for age, t(54) = 5.43, p < .001, with teens receiving higher scores than 30-year-olds.”
Includes statistical results formatted according to APA style. (Tables and charts are useful ways of representing the data, but they must also conform to APA style.)
Mentions nonsignificant results as well as statistically significant results.
Discussion

Interprets findings from the results section, including significant findings, trends, and so on.
Relates findings to hypothesis, explaining what you found or did not find. (Try to find something of value, even if results are not conclusive. In other words, state what you learned.)
Compares results with previous research, and states why you think they conform to or contradict what is known.
Critiques your design and suggests improvements that could be made.
Makes a concluding statement briefly restating results and discussion. States how the knowledge gained could be used to extend the knowledge base or solve a problem. Points to unanswered questions.
References

Includes all direct sources referred to in the body of the paper.
Uses a hanging indent.
Lists references in alphabetical order by name of first author.
