Compare a piece of American culture with the culture of another Country

Prompt: For the Documented Synthesis paper, you will write an expository paper (a paper to inform, educate, or explore) on a topic related to culture. You can think about global, national, local, or family culture. You may also use any topic we have discussed in class. You must explain how your topic is related to, creates, affects, or is affected by culture. Aside from an expository paper, the synthesis must also be a compare and contrast essay. For example, Compare a piece of American culture with the culture of another Country. One topic we discussed in class was the issue of domestic violence. We read in Trevor’s book that in South Africa, abusing the wife was to show love and if you didn’t hit her, you didn’t care about her. You can write about how that compares with domestic abuse in America and how it reflects the culture in both countries (Does South African culture establish men as the head of household? Who is the head of the household in American culture?) (This is only an example and you do not have to use it). General Requirements: Since this is an essay, you need to include: An introduction with an expository thesis statement Minimum of 3 supportive body paragraphs that include your scholarly sources. DO NOT SOLELY SUMMARIZE THE SOURCES Your sources are there to provide examples and evidence, not to speak for you. 80%-90% of your paper should be your ideas, analysis, and explanation. A Conclusion that leaves your reader with some direction of where to go now that they’ve read your paper. What do you want from them? The awareness? To convince others? To move into action? Etc. Use rhetorical modes to develop your paper You may write a compare/contrast essay or a problem/solution essay DO NOT INCLUDE QUESTIONS IN YOUR PAPER Example, “Let me ask this, how is incarceration fair?” Paper Requirements: This assignment will require students to exhibit the ability to research and synthesize sources to compose a thoughtful and informed paper. This is an opportunity for students to practice their skills in developing an expository essay for an extended period of time in multiple pages. 4-5 pages Minimum of 4-5 sources Since this paper deals with culture and/or current events, you may use 2 popular sources.
