Data visualization

How do modes of visualization – scientific representation, grids, standards, etc. – configure and construct the worlds within which we can conceptualize information and communication? Using architectural examples, discuss how unique modes of this world-making manifest architecturally. Discuss both the instrumental reason that architects employ in their design processes and in the resultant built artifacts. Finally, how has architectural practice served as a critical reflection upon the modes of visualization and conceptualization that they operate within? Provide examples. This question demands a critical engagement with both text and architecture. The aim of this assignment is not to offer a detailed explanation of the argument of a given text, but to work synthetically across the readings and discussions. Similarly, the aim is not an open-ended speculation on architectural works, but a rigorous examination of their practices within a defined theoretical project. In each case, feel free to address the extended scope of architectural production: drawings, renderings, software, treatises, folios, films, exhibitions, catalogs, etc. Some general tips on argumentation: Be clear and concise; use your words wisely.
