When you introduce a topic, assume they know something about it already, but not exactly what you have in mind. Put an object before them, and even if they recognize it, they’ll still want to know what you think it is, what you have to say about it.
Definition is one of your most important ways of giving readers what they need to know. You’ll find brief definition useful to clarify one of those “special words or phrases,” and now and then you’ll extend a definition into a whole essay, investigating not only what a thing is but also what it suggests, how people react to it, how it fits into the scheme of things.
