Case Analysis: Product Development

The dishwasher was in vented in the 19th Century by a lady looking to take care of the state of her china; her name was Josephine Cochrane. The following is an engineering design of the dishwasher.

a.
Part Description

The basic parts of a dishwasher are the following:

Rack—it holds the dishes in position inside the washer.

Spray-arm—it rotates to spray even amounts of water mixed with detergent at the dishes.

Motor and Pump—they run the rotating spray arm.

Rack sliders—aid in sliding the racks to load dishes.

Float switch—sets the position for the rack.

Detergent dispenser—dispenses detergent to mix with the water.

Heating coil—gently heats the washed dishes to dry them off.

Steel door panel—it gives water proof protection to the water inside the washer.

Timer—regulates the time for different cycle washes.

Handle—aids in opening and closing the washer.

Outer door panel—casing that protects the washer from the external surrounding.

Production description

Dishwashers are mass produced home appliances intended to be used by a majority of the public.  The basic operation of the dishwasher is to combine water with detergent and then spray the mixture on to the dishes. After cleaning, it pumps out the used water and rinses the dishes using a rinsing agent and clean water. In the same way, after rinsing, the water is pumped out, and the dishes are dried by moderate heating or passing dry air. The device has switches that aid in controlling the cycles and lengths of washes. It makes cleaning dishes efficient and convenient.

Decisions for product development

The dishwasher is both a domestic and industrial large-scale product. For this reason, manufacturing considers several decisions on development.  Strategic consumer focused development considers the following:

i.
Strategic marketing plan

ii.
Identification of customer opportunities

iii.
Primary development and concept development

iv.
Product development

v.
Commercial launch preparations (Andersson & Hagejard, 2016).
