Thus far, you have been introduced to: the gothic genre and its defining elements, the characteristics of Romanticism (1750-1850), and its connection to the Industrial Revolution, author biography on the life of Mary Shelley and examined the most salient themes and motifs in Frankenstein. In addition, you have reviewed the components of the five-paragraph essay structure and proper MLA citations/Works Cited. For the purpose of this assignment, you are to choose from one of the following three topics and write a formal, five-paragraph essay in response to the question or statement.
Mary Shelley drew upon the philosophies of John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau in her writing of Frankenstein. Locke’s essay “Concerning Human Understanding” (1690) argued that a child is a “blank slate” that is formed only through experience. Rousseau’s’ published work Emile, or On Education (1762) promotes the idea that a child’s upbringing is responsible for his development. Your task is to write a formal, five-paragraph essay to explain how Frankenstein’s creature does OR does not adhere to the characteristics of blank-slate theory, also known as Tabula rasa.
