Task 1 1500 words(40%) Child abuse is a significant social issue, which has the potential to impact on the development and wellbeing of the individual throughout the lifespan. Nurses have a vital role in recognising and responding to abuse. The purpose of assessment task one is to investigate the roles and professional responsibilities of the nurse when caring for children who may have experienced abuse. Further, this assessment task is designed to encourage you to consider the impact that abuse may have on a young child’s health and development. Scenario: You are working in the Emergency Department when Samuel, a 2 year old boy, presents with a fracture to his right scapula. Samuel is a previously well child with no significant health history. On assessment, Samuel has significant swelling and bruising over his right shoulder, and is distressed when you handle his right arm. He also has small, oval shaped bruises on his upper arm, and yellowed bruising around his left ear. You take a history from Samuel’s mother, who tells you that Samuel fell off the bottom step and landed on his back yesterday afternoon. She states that he “seemed ok” after the fall but that when she got him out of bed this morning he wouldn’t move his arm, so she brought him to the emergency department.

AssignmentQuestion: Discuss the potential impact of abuse on the development and wellbeing of the child. Identify factors in Samuel’s presentation that may indicate that he has been abused, and describe your professional responsibilities when abuse is suspected. Unit learning outcomes and Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes: This assessment task provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate the following Unit Learning outcomes and Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes;

• This assessment task encourages you to consider the impact of abuse on a young child. The focus of this scenario is on physical abuse, however it is important to consider the ways that abuse may affect the child’s development and well being more broadly.

• You are also asked to consider aspects of the scenario which may indicate that abuse is occurring. You are encourage to think beyond physical indicators of abuse, to consider other aspects of this scenario which would increase your suspicion of abuse.

• Finally, you are asked to describe the role of the nurse in responding to abuse. You are encouraged to reflect on legal requirements for nurses working in Victoria who suspect that abuse is occurring.

• It is expected that you will use professional literature to support your discussion. The majority of references should come from peer-reviewed journals, and be no more than 10 years old. Presentation: Front page: to include student name, student number, assignment title, and word count. Adhere to word limit requirements (within 10%): The word count does not include headings, references page, reference citations and direct quotes. Reference list: should be provided on a separate page headed ‘References’ at the end of the assignment.

Appendices: (if applicable) are attached after the reference list page Table of contents: do not include a table of contents unless instructed to do so Headings: only to be used in assignments of >3,000 words Specific presentation requirements as per APA style guide. (2012). Retrieved from http://www.apastyle.org Font: 12-point type size (never use a larger point size for headings or on the title page).

Use Times or Times New Roman. Spacing: Double-line spacing (Do not insert extra lines between paragraphs or the references list entries.) Please check the document before submitting to the dropbox to ensure the formatting has not changed. Software for converting word documents to PDF is available to download from the Deakin software catalogue at no cost.

Structure: Your assignment must contain a purposeful introduction that outlines some general background to the topic, an aim and purpose and themes for discussion. The body of the assignment will constitute about 80% of the word limit and provide key arguments supported by literature. The body of the assignment is normally organised in paragraphs of approximately 150 words with each paragraph focused on explanation of one idea. There should be a logical progression of ideas as demonstrated by logically linked arguments/discussion made in each paragraph. Each paragraph should commence with a topic sentence and end with a link to the next paragraph, and show a logical progression of ideas/argument. The conclusion paragraph should provide a summation of ideas, draw together the discussion, present no new material (references are not expected in the conclusion paragraph) and offer your position drawn from the discussion.

Communication using academic writing: Adhere to conventions of written English; for example, word choice, professional language, grammar, use of appropriate sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. Use direct quotes sparingly. Instead, re-expression of author arguments into your own words is required. If a direct quotation is used, you must explain how it adds to the discussion.
