REWRITE THE FOLLOWING ESSAY INTO YOUR OWN WORDS.

Police often use stereotypes and other characteristics to pre-judge and discriminate against those who to not meet their opinion of normalcy. Many “women-of-color” and the LGBTQ community experience these forms of harassment, and worse.

According to Law Enforcement Violence Against Women of Color it says,” These narratives of racial profiling and police brutality, as well as prevalent quantitative comparisons of the frequency and nature of traffic stops experienced by “African Americans”, “Hispanics”, and “Whites”, fail to analyze data along gender and racial lines, dominate discourse and debate around race-based policing and police violence to the exclusion of the experience of women of color”.

Many “women-of-color” face a two-pronged level of prejudice. They are discriminated for their race and their gender. There are many examples of these forms of police-based harassment and discrimination.

Sadly, these cases have only risen more so recently because of many no-tolerance laws and police policies. This is also apparent in the case of Domestic Violence situations. Usually, one of the participants must be arrested. This is especially true if there is evidence of a physical struggle/physical violence.

These cases many times involve “women-of-color”. When this situation arises, these women are much more likely to suffer abuse and prejudice from the arresting officers. When the situation involves two partners from the LGBTQ community; the situation is even worse.

Quoting once again from, Law Enforcement Violence Against Women of Color, it says, “Law enforcement agencies uphold and enforce society’s raced, gendered, and class structures, conventional notions of morality, and social norms established by dominant groups”.

Those members of the LGBTQ community can suffer extreme forms of this same police discrimination if the arriving officer on the scene is prejudiced against the LGBTQ. All sorts of both verbal name-calling, and sexual inuendo can happen.

“The criminalization approach has also brought many women into conflict with the law, particularly women of color, poor women, lesbians, sex workers, immigrant women, women with disabilities, and other marginalized women. For instance, under mandatory arrest laws, there have been numerous incidents where police officers called to domestic incidents have arrested the woman who is being battered.” (INCITE! Proclamation)

There has also been an alarming increase in the incarceration rates of “women-of-color”. This has been based upon a confluence of cases. The increase of incarceration for low-level drug offenses, the increased levels of battery and assault cases, etc.

“During the past fifteen years, the numbers of women, especially women of color in prison has skyrocketed. Prisons also inflict violence on the growing numbers of women behind bars. Slashing, suicide, the proliferation of HIV, strip searches, medical neglect and rape of prisoners has largely been ignored by anti-violence activists. The criminal justice system, an institution of violence, domination, and control, has increased the level of violence in society.” (INCITE! Proclamation)

Overall, the intersectional forms of oppression of “women-of-color “and of the LGBTQ community; have not been properly addressed by the politicians, the justice system, or the general population. It is a terrible form of negativity to suffer from even one form of prejudice, i.e., race, etc. But what if someone suffers from prejudice on many fronts at the same time?
