INSTRUCTIONS: • Essays must be organized around a clear argument (thesis statement) answering the essay question. The use of quotations must be kept to a minimum. They must include proper academic references and bibliography. • Essays must integrate relevant course materials and use examples from the readings to illustrate the arguments. They must also draw ideas and information/data from two additional sources outside the list of required class readings. In grading the essays, the relevance of the additional sources to the topic will be considered.

• Essays must be clearly organized and should contain an introduction, a thesis statement (in bold), a main body, and a concluding paragraph. Each paragraph must be clearly structured around a topic sentence (in bold). Essay Topic: Class materials suggested that a) human societies currently face an unprecedented environmental crisis that is caused by both affluence and poverty (development and underdevelopment); b) that the poor and marginalized in the global south are unfairly blamed for this crisis; and c) that developing countries are asked to unfairly bear a disproportionate share of the costs of environmental conservation. Do you think that this is the case? How would you explain the causes and impact of the current environmental crisis? Following your explanation of causes and effects, tell us what it would take to address environmental and social justice concerns?
