British author and poet who wrote overviews of American history and literature from the British perspective.
He says that American ideals of liberty, freedom, and equality are unrealistic – “Liberty is all very well, but men cannot live without masters.”
His tone is relatively sarcastic – when he refers to Benjamin Franklin as “the perfect man,” he is making fun of American history.
In Chapter 2, Lawrence discusses a list of Ben Franklin’s values – what do you make of these in the context of what we’ve learned about American history?
In your final paper, it is important to consider Lawrence’s tone – is he being serious? Is he poking fun at American values? Why?
Chapter 3 criticizes Hector St John de Crevecoeur, who wrote a famous essay that praised the American West.
It has since become a classic “romantic” narrative about the West
In Chapter 4, Lawrence criticizes the American treatment of Native Americans and claims that America is built upon “demons” of violence and genocide.
In Chapter 5, Lawrence argues that Fenimore Cooper (an American writer) was a “grump” who did not want to be American and favored the French.
