LEGAL NEWS.   This is an individual assignment.  You are divided into groups for these (randomly assigned, different groups each week) only because the discussion board becomes unwieldy – and it can be difficult for every student to come up with a unique news article – if the entire class participates together.

Find a news article about one of the specific areas of law covered in the chapter(s) assigned during the week this assignment is due.  The article should be primarily about the law:  a story about something else that just references a legal issue “in passing” will not get a high score.  An article about an alleged crime that mostly covers the facts of the case – instead of the legal issues involved – would not get a top score, for example.  It may take you a little more time to find a news article that is about the law, rather than the facts, but that’s what is required.  So start early.

The article can be about a case decided by a court.  BUT NOTE that it does not have to be a case.  It can, instead, be a general news story about legal topics – a discussion about proposed new legislation, for example.  Note that if it is an article about a case, it should be a significant case, such as one decided by the Supreme Court.  That would be “news.”  The decision of a court in Broomfield, Iowa about an ordinary contract dispute is just not terribly newsworthy, or educational.  In other words, it should be a story of some general significance.

            The article must be about the U.S. legal system.  International law is fascinating, but not the primary topic of this class.  The article should be “news.”  Anything from more than a year ago is not likely to qualify, unless it is about some unique or narrow topic that just doesn’t come up in the news all that often.  You cannot use an article another student has already posted.  You cannot use the same topic, either, UNLESS your article discusses a significantly different aspect of the topic than does a previously-posted article.

            To complete the assignment, open the discussion board and insert a link to the article.  Then, post a summary of the article, describing the legal issue(s) presented and summarizing the “pros and cons” or main discussion points about that legal issue from the article. 

The maximum score for each of these assignments is twenty (20).
