 Description At its simplest, Macbeth is a dramatic rendering of the tragic hero; however, in our discussions we explore Renaissance and Universal issues of: o fate versus freewill; o order versus chaos: o the theology of goodness versus evil; o the psychology of desire, conscience, violence, and repression; o gender, manhood, marriage, misogyny and cowardice; o time—the anxieties of the future and the depression of being trapped by the past; o and finally, equivocation—lies, truth, power, and/or appearance versus reality o (if there is another issue not mentioned here that you like, you are free to explore it). For this assessment you have 2 categories of prompts. Whichever idea/prompt (I, II) you choose, your assignment is not only to decide what the play is saying about one of these themes (your thesis), but also to analyze how the major motifs of the play (imagery, symbol, irony, equivocation) reinforce your idea (your support and analysis). Use textual evidence to support your arguments Minimum Requirements:about 8 pages of Times New Roman, 12 point font); MLA formatting with parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page. ′ Macbeth Essay prompts:(choose one) (literary analysis or macbeth synthesis) The Literary Analysis essay promt: • Purpose: research, analyze and (ultimately) interpret the universal and/or the Renaissance concerns of the play (your elucidation of a theme of the play)—at the most basic, your essay answers the question: Why should anyone (who’s human) care about the play? • Audience: those who’ve read/seen Macbeth, but either lack your understanding of the play, or perhaps even disagree with your interpretation. • Prompt: o First consider the list of topics/conflicts at the top of this page (maybe free-write and brainstorm on them, trying to make connections between the topics and characters, motifs, and specific quotes of the play.  After making your connections between the topics and Macbeth, use your ideas to begin your essay by tracing the imagery of the play—a single image or a series of related images—and show how that imagery enhances, reinforces, underscores, emphasizes, augments, and adds depth to your idea.
