An investigation and analysis of an alleged case of terrorism of your own choosing.

Pick a test case: Offer a concise and precise summary of the supposed act of terrorism (roughly ½-1 page). Provide only the details relevant for explaining the case and a thorough evaluation of it.

Then, answer the following questions:

First, does this case (that you picked) count as terrorism, according to the definition offered by Igor Primoratz, in Terrorism: A Philosophical Investigation? Explain Primoratz’s definition of terrorism (See chapter 1 pages 7-25, especially page 24) and why or why not this example counts as an act of terrorism (1-2 pages). Make sure you address each aspect of his definition, and how your test case fits the definition.

Second, based upon your reading of Primoratz, provide a moral evaluation of the chosen act of terrorism. Choose what you think would be the best way to morally justify the act of terrorism, according to the various ways Primoratz discusses in chapters 4-6. Pick one of the following: (1) Can the act be morally justified along consequentialist lines (chapter 4)? Why or why not? (2) Is the act of terrorism morally justifiable along rights-based defenses of the act (chapter 5)? Why or why not? (3) Would the act of terrorism be morally justified by Primoratz’s “defense of terrorism” in the face of supreme emergency (chapter 6), which he defines defensible when it is the only way a political community can avoid their extermination or ethnic cleansing and that it would be successful in adverting a moral disaster? Why or why not? (2-3 pages).

*Further guidelines for the papers:
• Papers must be 4-6 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font.

• Late papers will be docked a full letter grade for lateness.
• Extensions (without penalty) will not be granted except in extraordinary circumstances, and you must talk to me prior to the paper’s due date, and your request must be accompanied by the appropriate documentation.
• Plagiarism: Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive an “F” in the course, possibly an “FF”, and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the University’s academic honesty code.
