Proposed Research question and purpose statement Assignment Instructions
This element is submitted through Assignments for review by the instructor who will also provide feedback and any “course corrections” to focus the project feedback. The components of this assignment include a research question and a purpose and design statement. It must contain at least four peer-reviewed sources. The specific research question should be of depth and breadth required for a major project. Length: 3 pp.
Start your assignment with an introductory paragraph about your research topic and why it is of interest and a research “puzzle”. End your paragraph with your research question. This will be about 1 page double-spaced.
Next, provide a purpose statement that conveys your intentions about what you hope to produce. See the reference in your Lessons and review that it will usually be prefaced by some phrase like the following: “This paper examines . . .,” “The aim of this paper is to . . .,” or “The purpose of this essay is to . . .”. Remember that a purpose statement makes a promise to the reader about the development of the argument but does not preview the particular conclusions that the writer has drawn. (Here, this is different than Bui’s approach in chapter 1 of your textbook. For the intent of this assignment, I want to know what you are planning to do. You will revise this into past tense when you incorporate it into the actual thesis. For now, should be about 1-2 pages, double-spaced.)
Next, provide citations from at least 4 scholarly or peer-reviewed journals or books or other sources (government publications and websites, for example) that you have found that pertain to your research topic. (This is a minimum number of sources. To achieve full points on the assignment next week, follow the guidelines on the syllabus – eight sources, six must be peer-reviewed.) Please consult the Turabian Style Guide for the correct format for your citation. You may use either Turabian Bibliography format or Turabian References format. Just be consistent!! (Count this as page 3 for this assignment.)
