Refutation Essay Instructions

1000 words minimum

For this essay, you will be selecting the arguments (two to four) that most challenge your proposal. You will then compose an essay which presents those arguments and your response to them.

You are not arguing for both sides of the issue, your assertion is still that the problem you have chosen is important and must be resolved. In this paper, however, you must confront and appropriately deal with opposing points of view.

Points of opposition may come from those you disagree with your argument that the problem exists, those you disagree with the existence or the severity of the consequences you presented, or those you may argue against the cause(s) you claimed led to the problem. You might even counter opposition to your tentative solution, if you have already started thinking ahead to how you plan to resolve the problem in the final essay.

You must decide which 2-4 opposing arguments to present and counter in this paper.

Your paper should fairly present the opposing points of view and follow with your response to these claims. In the counterarguments, be sure to consistently maintain a reasonable, formal tone while refuting the opposition.

Finally, carefully construct the entire refutation so that it enhances your argument for your proposed solution. You should not weaken your position, but, rather, strengthen it by responding to opposition effectively.

You must also integrate a minimum of two reputable sources. Be sure to include in text citations to avoid plagiarizing. Also, be sure to include a Works Cited Page. Your paper should be formatted according to MLA guidelines.
