Concept AnalysisA concept is usually one or two words that convey meaning, understanding, or feelings between or among individuals. In a concept analysis, then, the author uses logic and explanation to develop a point—perhaps to change the way people think about a certain concept, to introduce a new concept that people may be unaware of, or to clarify a concept that the author believes to be widely misunderstood.For your essay, you will write a focused, argumentative essay about a concept that you believe is commonly misunderstood and/or misused.Getting Started:You will probably want to consider many different possibilities for your concept analysis before you settle on a topic. Brainstorm, use looping and freewriting, and use other invention techniques (such as clustering) to generate a list of potential topics. Chapter 4 has some especially helpful invention exercises on pages 127-129.You will then want to do some research, as your concept analysis will need to include a minimum of TWO sources. You may also reference/use materials we discuss in class. Remember to cite RELIABLE sources—absolutely NO Wikis, Ask.com, Yahoo Answers, or WebMD. Sources should contribute to the paper in a substantial way: perhaps providing context, clarification, emphasis, credibility/authority, and/or illustration of the controversy. Rhetorical Considerations:This essay should be a formally written, academic essay for a college-level audience. Your writing should, first and foremost, be coherent, developed, and clear—but you will also want to consider style, thinking carefully about word choice, point of view, and tone.
