S FASHION COLOUR BLIND? (working title)
IS FASHION COLOUR BLIND? (working title)
Naomi Campbell complains every year that designers do not use enough black models –are we
unaware because
• We live in a multicultural society, yet the fashion catwalks are mainly white
• Does this reflect society properly or not?
• Should fashion houses be using a mix of models?
• Do magazines use enough black models—which ones? Are they household names?
• Is the High street any better? Do shop windows mirror the public or not?
• Are makeup companies more enlightened –or do they leave it for ‘black skin’ makeup • Are ads companies using more of a racial mix ? Which ones stand out?
• Name three to five top models & brands where they are featured, this can include entertainers as
many have their own perfume.
Vox pop: ask three to four SHORT questions
This is the main feature and more indepth but it is not an essay, although it still needs research.
Therefore, you do not cite references within the copy as you would for an essay. This is not
appropriate in editorial writing. You can refer to an author or an article as for example: “In The
Times, Laura Craik said:….” and you can include a separate list of references at the end of your
article.
You will be given a choice of three subjects to write about that will be of current or valid fashion
interest.
Utilise different methods of writing, using (original if possible) interview quotes within the copy.
You will also be expected to use Vox Pops (interviewing people in the street) to reflect the subject
matter. When doing these, always ask them the same questions and find a wide range of ages, not
just people of the same age. Include them in a separate box so they are grouped together.
Marking criteria:
• To produce an informative, engaging article
• Good headline and sell
• A strong introductory paragraph
• Well balanced, logical copy
• Ability to structure copy to engage readers
• Give different viewpoints on the subject not just one
• Well researched
• Accuracy in spelling and information
• Correct grammar, fluent sentences
• Evidence of originality
• Strong summary that rounds off the subject matter
