“Case-based instruction is a teaching method which requires students to actively
participate in real or hypothetical problem situations, reflecting the kind of experiences
naturally encountered in the discipline under study”. “Case-based instruction holds
pedagogical promise for the education of Instructional Designers, who must be prepared
to exercise a high level of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and reasoned
judgment in their work”. (Ertmer and Rusell, 1995). Case-based approaches are
constructivist instructional strategies that help students apply their emerging knowledge
by studying design problems in authentic real-world situations (Jonassen, 1999, 2011;
Jonassen & Hernandez Serrano, 2002; Stepich & Ertmer, 2009).
The Midterm exam involves reading, analyzing, and framing a solution.

3. Based on what you have learned in our class discussions and readings, compose

The Case
As part of your new job as a Consultant for InHealth Corp., an American
corporation in the food distribution field, you have been given the task of designing a
training solution for Human Resources Administrators. InHealth is opening
operations in two states (Indiana and Ohio) in the Midwest and two states in the North
East (Vermont and Maine). InHealth, has recruited a group of eight HR
Administrators who will be working in the new offices in the four mentioned states.
The HR Administrators will be responsible for Training and Development and
Performance Assessment. Although, these new employees have basic knowledge for the
job, they need training on the specific technical aspects of the position.
You have been hired as a Consultant by the InHealth Corp. Senior Vice-President
for Human Resources, who is giving you the flexibility to decide how to approach the
solution to the problem. She also said that you can use all the resources required to
develop and implement the solution.
Based on your knowledge of Instructional Design prepare your case and propose a
training solution considering the following:
If instruction or training is the answer, then you should proceed with the instructional
design process. Each correct question = 20 points. Remember, there is not just one
correct answer as Instructional Design involves several approaches.

designing the training solution.
3. What would be your strategy to determine the content of the training program?
Explain how you would implement that strategy.

objective.
5. Explain the instructional strategies that you would propose to implement the
instruction and the resources needed for implementation.
