Guidelines for research proposal
A typical research proposal has three chapters- Introduction, review of literature, and methodology. These three chapters are pretty long too. Here we will cover major components of these chapters.
1. Begin with an introduction (1 page):
a. Here you introduce your research study and mentions about the main focus of your research.
b. Problem statement: Define the problem you are planning to investigate. Here we use terms like ‘this study will compare, investigate, describe, determine, examine, evaluate, explore’ etc.
2. Literature review (1-2 pages)
a. Try to find related studies conducted in your research problem. There are thousands of studies conducted every day. You will find many in the area you are going to do the research. Find at least five research articles. (Use library website to search for articles)
b. Write down what they found and try to find the gaps in their research. Look for the limitations in those researches.
c. Finally, in this chapter you should be able to mention why you are conducting this research (this is not because of personal reasons rather due to professional reasons)
d. End this chapter with your research questions/s and null hypothesis. If you are using qualitative methodology, you don’t need to write null hypothesis.
3. Methodology (2 pages)
a. Write about the population you are studying about and state the sample size you will be selecting.
b. Narrate about the sampling technique that will be used in the research.
c. Discuss about the data collection tools (questionnaire, standardized scales, interview, focus groups)
d. How will you collect data?
e. Plan for data analysis.
4. How would you connect your study into your major field of study (social work/sociology) (250 words)
5. How would your study benefit your field (social work/sociology) (250 words)
6. References (use APA format)
