We about to start a major project for STACC English 100 where you can showcase all of the elements of writing that you have learned so far. You will make an annotated bibliography, write concrete, detailed paragraphs with grammatically correct sentences, explore your authentic voice, develop essay structure around a thesis, and use and analyze quotes appropriately. Finally, you will also learn how to use the library to research and evaluate evidence.

On October 31st, you will bring in a picture of a relative/a close family friend/mentor that has impacted your life and/or your family’s life in a significant way. The picture must be at least 10 years old, but it can be 100 years old. You should choose a picture that you can ask other people about. Maybe your mom or grandparents know when and where it was taken. Maybe two family member have conflicting memories (that might actually make it more interesting to investigate!).

In class you will share your picture with a group, and they will ask questions about the picture. You will also develop a list of questions. Once you have a list you will begin your investigation. The main questions you will answer are:

What was happening in this person’s life at the time? This will be information that you will ask people who know this person.
What historical events influenced this person’s experience and decisions? Describe the historical event or phenomenon. This information you will back up with lots of research. You will need at least 5 credible sources cited in your paper with a works cited page attached.
How does this person’s life and experiences influence your life?
This will be ALL you!

In your paper you will tell the story of the picture, the person, the history, and you.

You can organize this in any way you choose as long as you have a descriptive hook, a thesis, at least two body sections that are titled with at least two paragraphs per section, and finally a powerful conclusion.

It must be at least 5 pages long and it must follow ALL the MLA guidelines of research papers.

Sources

You will use at least 5 sources in your research paper, but no more than 10. Your sources can provide different types of information and opinion that you will incorporate into your paper.

There are many kinds of sources, and it is up to you to confirm their validity.

Statistics— Be aware of sample size and possible bias. 90% of Pasadena City College students are awesome. How reliable is such a statistic?
Factual data—this data should be widely agreed on by most people, or supported by other reliable information. Pasadena City College is in Pasadena, CA.
Reputable opinions and claims—make sure the individuals have the credentials to be making these claims and are respected in their fields. U.S. News says Pasadena City College is awesome.
Relevant Personal Testimony—the testimony might be from individuals directly involved in the issue you are investigating. They may be able to provide first-hand experience that will help validate your argument. Your classmate says Pasadena City College is awesome.

What some kinds of sources to look for?

Let’s say that the person in your photograph was home-schooled. What perspectives might be of use?
