Format: Times New Roman, 12-pt font, 1-inch margins (all sides), double-spaced, Word .doc or .docx file only!

When citing readings, please use the simple parenthetical citation, for example, (Baym 2010). If you cite lecture, please just cite (Lin, “Title of Lecture,” Date). Number your answers accordingly! For example, if you answered question 3, please label it “Question 3” before your answer or as a heading/title. Submission Information: Submit through bCourses website only! Late exams are not accepted. Please do not wait until the last minute. I will not make any exceptions. See syllabus for details on what to do if you encounter errors in submission–follow the directions exactly (this requires that you submit your exam early). Exam Details: This is a take-home final, so you may use any resources you have available to complete the final. Although you may discuss the final with other students, you may NOT work with other students directly in writing the final together (i.e. this is not a group final). Finals with too similar answers will be looked at with suspicion–so please avoid this situation. Please write an essay, which means a (very) short introduction and conclusion. As a suggestion (which means you do not have to), you may use a sort of 5-paragraph essay format for each question. Your short essay should have a thesis/argument that answers the question in the prompt directly. Then, your subsequent paragraphs should each be devoted to a key argument, example, or case that proves your overarching argument. You may consider counter-arguments in your conclusion or where most applicable/obvious.

EXAM: write 2 short essays (paragraph form) of no more than 1000 words for each answer (approximately 4 pages PER answer for a total of 8 pages).

1. Technopanics, moral panic, and privacy panic cycles are all examples of patterned ways that society often responds to new technology and the social problems that arise with it. Using appropriate lectures and readings, define and explain what technopanic/moral panic consists of.

Then, using at least two different examples as proof from readings and/or cases from this class, answer the following question: Is technopanic/moral panic more helpful or more harmful in dealing with the negative effects of technology on society?

3. Although virtual communities and social media primarily exist in the virtual world, a case can be made that they impact the physical world just as much as the virtual one. How have physical spaces and face-to-face interactions changed as a result from virtual communities and social media? Use at least three examples from readings and/or cases from class to prove your argument.
