In Vincent Parillo’s essay, “The Causes of Prejudice”, the author explores significant cultural, sociological, and psychological factors that cause people to display discriminatory or hateful behavior towards people who are different than them. For this essay, you are going to identify and explain examples in other readings we have done this quarter.
Your assignment: Choose a reading in which the narrator or other major character was the target prejudiced or discriminatory behavior. Using examples from “Causes of Prejudice” identify the cause of this behavior. Give specific examples from each text to support your answer. Next, consider how this person reacted to and dealt with this behavior. Were this person’s action effective, or could he or she handled this differently?
Here is one possible example: Vincent Parillo cites the emotional level of prejudice as motivating people’s hateful actions towards others. In “Shooting an Elephant”, George Orwell shows how, as a police officer in Imperial Burma, he was often the target of prejudiced attitudes from the local Burmese, attitudes that were rooted in their anger and frustration with the British colonialists.
Some things to consider:
Make sure you have a clear THESIS that conveys your thought and opinions about this topic.
At the same time, be aware of the theses of both texts. How are these theses supported?
How do the articles address issues of identity (either personal, cultural, ethnic, or political)? How does INTERSECTIONALITY relate to these issues?
How does this text relate to your own experiences? Again, do you agree or disagree with the way the author or character reacted to the behavior? Explain.
Essentials:
Again, make sure your essay has a clear thesis statement. Write it out before you begin drafting.
Create an OUTLINE. I would focus on specific parts of the text that will provide strong support. Summarize and paraphrase these sections in your notes. You are not required to hand in these pre-writing materials, but I will be happy to take a look at them.
You will need to give specific examples from the text to support the points you are making. These should be done with a balance of summarizing, paraphrasing, and direct quotations. Though you may include more, your analysis should include at least five in-text citations from the text (For help with this, remember the citation snowman model that we have practiced in class!). These citations should be formatted MLA style. Use Chapter 29 (“What Do I DO with Sources I Find?”) for tips on how to do this. We will continue to practice these skills in class.
You will also need to include a Works Cited page.
If you wish, you may also include references to other sources. These, too, will need to be cited appropriately. However, if you do choose to use other sources, don’t let them sidetrack you; the focus of your analysis should be on the text from our readings.
Requirements:
It must be 3-4 pages, double-spaced.
Again, you should have at least five in-text citations.
Please include a title.
