Novel Discussion Questions – Assignment will be individually graded and is NOT a group assignment. In other words, do your own work! Consider the following questions as you prepare an individual 3 -4 pages typed analysis of the novel to be turned in. Each person must respond independently to the items. The written paper is due in typed form on Monday, November 19th. Be certain to address each category in your written presentation of the novel. You may respond to these items by sectioning out your paper with the headers for each section and then responding. Do not write the question and then the answer but rather discuss the items in complete sentences by section. In general, you should have one typed page per category. Plot 1. What happened in the story? What were the three or four most significant events that you found in the novel and where are they found (as in page number and citation) and explain why you found them to be personally significant for you? 2. What might have happened if a certain event had not taken place? 3. Were you able to predict the ending? 4. Which chapter was the most important to the story? Why? 5. How does the significance of the title of the novel tie into the events of the novel? Author Style 1. What special words did the author use to help you connect emotionally to the reading? (Or in what ways did the author appeal to the senses of the reader?) Again, this is your own personal individual response to the novel – on a personal note – and not a “group” feeling. 2. What images have the author’s writing left in your mind? How do these images connect to any specific behavior or experience that you have had or shared in which is relatable to your book? Be specific with your page references. 3. How does the author let you know when and where the story is taking place? Be specific. 4. What do you like about the author? (not from what you research but from what you read about him intuitively in the work?) 5. What details are provided about the author, like a brief bio on the jacket cover or critic comments provided from print media who have critiqued the book? Affective 1. How did you feel while reading the book? Why did you feel this way? 2. What was the most exciting/unusual/ mysterious event? 3. Does the mood of the story change? How? 4. What impact does and/or did this reading have on African American culture? 5. How does this novel tie into the times in which we presently live? 6. Tie in this novel to at least 2 of our course objectives while clearly defining which objectives you are addressing
