Where is the fairness in UEFA’s Financial Fair Play?

The Financial Times (FT) is one of the most recognisable English language international newspapers, with a particular emphasis on business and financial news. The paper is keen to publish more content on the business of sport. The Editor has invited you to contribute a piece exploring an ethical issue related to the business or finances of sport. Moreover, he is keen to stress to you that the FT is an international newspaper and that he is very interested in articles which explore ethical issues around the business of sport from across the world. While each article is to be no more than 1,500 words, nevertheless they are expected to be academically informed, drawing on literature from the disciplines of finance, economics, accounting or governance as appropriate. Newspaper opinion piece on Ethical issues related to the business of sport. It IS an opinion piece. BUT for this piece in the Financial Times your opinion needs to be informed (and visibly informed) by academic reading. Needs to draw on literature from the disciplines of finance, economics, accounting or governance as appropriate. References are expected. However, it need not be referenced in the traditional accepted way. Instead reference the author(s)’s name in the piece and use endnotes to identify the source. Also provide a list of references. This simply for the Editor’s benefit –the list will not be published. A few things to think about: 1) be sure to spend time discussing or critiquing “fairness”. This is the hook for your piece and is the ethical link between sport and finance. 2) be careful not to try and cover too much. Focus on aspects of fairness and FFP and hence give yourself time and space to discuss these in detail. 3) make sure your piece draws on and is informed by some relevant academic literature. There are a number of papers in journals which discuss aspects of fairness and its meaning.
