Health Assessment of Children’s Weight

Discussion: Health Assessment of Children’s Weight
Body measurements can provide a general picture of whether a child is receiving adequate nutrition or is at risk for health issues. These data, however, are just one aspect to be considered. Lifestyle, family history, and culture—among other factors—are also relevant. That said, gathering and communicating this information can be a delicate process.
For this Discussion, you will consider examples of children with various weight issues. You will explore how you could effectively gather information and encourage parents and caregivers to be proactive about their children’s health and weight.
To prepare:
• Consider the following examples of pediatric patients and their families:
o Overweight 5-year-old boy with overweight parents
o Slightly overweight 10-year-old girl with parents of normal weight
o 5-year-old girl of normal weight with obese parents
o Slightly underweight 8-year-old boy with parents of normal weight
o Severely underweight 12-year-old girl with underweight parents
• Select one of the examples on which to focus for this Discussion. What health issues and risks may be relevant to the child you selected?
• Based on the risks you identified, consider what further information you would need to gain a full understanding of the child’s health. Think about how you could gather this information in a sensitive fashion.
• Consider how you could encourage parents or caregivers to be proactive toward the child’s health.
By Day 3
Post an explanation of the health issues and risks that are relevant to the child you selected. Describe additional information you would need in order to further assess his or her weight-related health. Taking into account the parents’ and caregivers’ potential sensitivities, list at least three specific questions you would ask about the child to gather more information. Provide at least two strategies you could employ to encourage the parents or caregivers to be proactive about their child’s health and weight.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
Week 3: Growth, Measurement, and Nutrition
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years, with an estimated 12.5 million children considered obese (CDC, 2012). When seeking insights about a patient’s overall health and nutritional state, body measurements can provide a valuable perspective. This is particularly important with pediatric patients. Measurements such as height and weight can provide clues to potential health problems and help predict how children will respond to illness. Nurses need to be proficient at using assessment tools such as the Body Mass Index (BMI) and growth charts in order to assess nutrition-related health risks and pediatric development while being sensitive to other factors that may affect these measures.
This week, you will examine assessment techniques, health risks and concerns, and recommendations for care related to patient growth, weight, and nutrition.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
• Assess weight-related health risks for pediatric patients
• Design effective strategies for communicating with parents or caregivers about children’s weight-related health
• Apply concepts, theories, and principles relating to health assessment techniques and considerations related to growth, measurement, and nutrition
• Apply assessment skills to collect patient health histories*
*The Assignment related to this Learning Objective is introduced this week and submitted in Week 4.

Establishing My Academic and Career Path { Masters in Public

Establishing My Academic and Career Path { Masters in Public health}
As you begin the transition from academic courses to career opportunities, reflect on how the strategies already discussed can help to guide you through the process. Consider the degree path you have chosen and what additional skills or activities you should engage in beyond the academic learning in your courses to be successful. What initiatives and goals do you have for this career? Begin and continue to establish your academic journey and career goals.
Individual courses within the program will offer opportunities through assignments that develop particular skills pertinent to specific career requirements and transfer of acquired knowledge. Other courses and specific assignments such as interview, practicum, and capstone projects provide opportunities for students to be exposed to relevant problems and creative activities in health care. These opportunities will require students to apply techniques acquired from the classroom to active investigation with experienced mentors in the field.
Research where to find career openings in your chosen field, select a position you might be interested in, and identify the qualifications and experience required. Identify these requirements as you progress through the coursework provided in your program. Take initiative to inquire and explore as you make connections with your coursework and career goals. Some items to consider further are membership in a professional association, the use of Internet job boards for research into future trends, licensure compliance throughout the country/world, and occupational conditions such as location, shifts worked, required equipment, or safety standards.
Listed below are some suggestions related to the types of information that you may want to include in this section of the document:
1) Who? Who would make up my network (e.g., peers, instructors, professionals, colleagues) essential to success in my chosen field in relation to this particular course?
2) What? What are my findings from researching competencies and/or certification requirements for my specific job role in relation to this course?
3) When? When should I begin to make the connection between my course of study and my career goals?
4) Where? Where does this course fit in my career goals? Where could I schedule an interview or internship to bridge the theory in my course with the practice of a job in the field?
5) Why? Why are peer-reviewed articles important and what is the significance of them in a career in health care?
6) How? How does this course relate to the requirements of my career goals? How can I make a link between the course and career experience that I need?

? Review the pathophysiology of chronic and co-occurring conditions.? Research the relationship between commonly co-occurring conditions.? Identify how the relationship influences patient presentation and treatment.? Critique and discuss the role of chronic conditions in paramedic clinical decision making.the relationship between Diabetes & Cystic Fibrosis .The aim of the discussion forum is to post your initial research and thoughts regarding the following questions.
? PART 1: Pathophysiology
Outline the pathophysiology and the potential complications / relationships. How might they present in a patient
? PART 2: Consideration of risks to decision making and care planning
How does the disease process(es) /and potential complications effect:-diagnosis e.g. diagnostic overshadowing —-priority of care-Patient outcomes e.g. how they may adversely affect outcomes.
? PART 3: Factors that influence transport and priority to tertiary careConsider and discuss the factors that would influence transport and priority to tertiary care e.g. (these are suggestions and by no means exhaustive)-the severity of the case or chronic condition(s),-age of the patient,-how long the patient has been managing both conditions,-the prolonged chronic nature of these conditions and the effect that has on body systems etc.
