CL 6 SP MOD 3 D 1

Specialized Instruction: Academic Reading and Reading in the Content Areas

Reading is a term that encompasses many elements, from the most concrete learning-to-read skills of phonics and fluency, to the most sophisticated reading-to-learn abilities to evaluate primary source materials in social sciences or interpret figurative language in poetry.

It involves everything from the ability to distinguish speech sounds to the complicated ability to independently read and comprehend text. Whether you are leading teachers of young children with exceptionalities in basic reading skills, or you work with those who teach older students to access content area texts, it is important to understand evidence-based practices in teaching reading across the full spectrum of literacy.

In this module, you will explore literacy development from beginning to end, from the building blocks of reading to supporting older students in using reading comprehension strategies. You will learn how to evaluate and select the most appropriate evidence-based strategies for teaching reading to students with diverse exceptionalities.
