• Below you will find an anecdote, a snapshot of a scenario where a child, Jacob, is playing. • You will read the case scenario, analyze, and:

1. Identify a. What is Jacob learning/have learned? b. How is he learning/have learned? 2. Identify three different theories of learning covered in the course that can explain each of the following concepts below, and engage in discussion, describing how each of the concepts below are addressed by each of the theories you have chosen. a. Jacob’s behaviour based on his developmental age and developmental stage in early childhood and as identified by each theory. b. The learning process. c. What they are learning d. How they are learning. 3. Consider the case scenario within the social, cultural and economical context in which we live, such as expectations for teachers and parents, the role of cultural differences, the role of gender differences, the role of social and economical differences, ethnicity, the role of parenting, and any other social, economical and/or political pressures that may impact each case scenario. 4. The course textbook is a starting point to identify the three different theories, however students are expected to do additional research about the theories.

Anecdote Child’s Name: Jacob (2.10) Place: Schoolyard Setting: a playground with a climbing structure in the centre of a sanded area, surrounded by a paved walkway where children can ride bikes. Observation Jacob (2.11) looks are at D. (2.10) and yells, “Quick, quick, let’s go to the bus.” D. replies, “Let’s go to the bus.” They both run to the climbing structure, and go up the stairs to a flat platform, where a steering wheel is permanently attached to the railing. Jacob turns the wheel around and says, “ I’m driving the bus very fast.” D. says, “Drive fast.” A teacher approaches and asks, “Can I come on the bus, please?” Jacob replies, “Yes, this is the number fourteen.” The teacher walks up to the platform and Jacob proceeds to pretend he is driving by turning the steering wheel around and around. D. goes down the slide. After a few seconds, the teachers say, “Ok, I think I will get off in the next stop.” Jacob says, “No, no, the bus is driving fast. You have to wait to stop. We are going to the mall.” “Oh, ok,” says the teacher, and after a few more seconds, “Now, can I get off?” Jacob pretends to stop the bus by stopping to turn the steering wheel around, and says “Ok, the bus is stopped now. Do you wanna play with me?”
