• Human Development
For your course project, you will explore an area of human lifespan development of your choosing. You may select a topic that applies to your professional goals, or one that is simply of interest to you. You have two options for the format of your project:
• Option A: Research-based examination of an area of human development, application of developmental theory to a topic, examination of research findings and methods, and application of findings in a professional setting.
Requirements
Option A
Select an area of lifespan development you are interested in researching:
• Language development.
• Cognitive development.
• Psychosocial development.
• Moral development.

Select a stage of development you wish to focus on (infancy, early childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, and so on).
Now, consider a topic to examine. Some examples include:
• Prenatal exposure to drugs and the effects on language development in infancy.
• The effects of autism on attachment in adult relationships.
• The role of peer groups in psychosocial development in middle childhood.
• The effects of cyber bullying on psychosocial development in adolescence.
• The effects of exposure to violence at school on moral development in adolescence.
• The effects of family addictions on identity stability in young adulthood.
• The effects of PTSD on cognitive development in middle adulthood.
• Family relationships and psychosocial development in late adulthood.
These are only examples.
• The next step is to review the prominent theories associated with the area of development and choose at least one theory to investigate. Major relevant theories include Piaget’s cognitive development, Kohlberg’s or Gilligan’s theory of moral development, Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, Chomsky’s nativist theory of language development, and so forth. Other theories of development may also be used. For example, you may want to use continuity theory (a theory within psychosocial theory) for a topic on late adulthood.

use the library to locate recent research articles on the topic. You should locate at least three scholarly research articles. You should also feel free to search Internet sites for case study examples or video clips on the topic. However, the majority of the resources you use must be scholarly research.
• Describe your topic and include background information. Include information on the theory you are applying.
• Describe the types of research conducted on the topic (from your research articles) and summarize the findings. Are there any flaws in the research? How does the theory you selected apply to the topic, and how do the research findings support or challenge the theory? How do the findings influence personal behaviors and values? How can you apply the findings in a professional setting?
• Collect and analyze the results of a survey. You can use a free survey site or have people fill out the survey on paper. Once you have collected the results, you will report which answers received the most responses (look at the means) and offer your interpretation of the data.
