You are responsible for selecting a textbook for your second language class to use.
Identify an appropriate textbook and write a report for your supervisor in which you:
a. Describe i) the class, and ii) the textbook
b. Select ONE teaching unit or chapter from the textbook and analyse the tasks, activities and exercises in the unit with reference to the literature on language teaching and learning
c. make a recommendation regarding whether or not this book should be used. (You can make EITHER a positive OR a negative recommendation).
Attach a printout or photocopy of the unit, or a URL to the web page.
NB: Phrase books aimed at tourists are NOT suitable for this assignment.
Workbooks which supplement a textbook are also not suitable.

 What does this textbook focus on? (e.g. reading, writing, grammar, language of business etc.)
 Why do you think this text is suitable for your class? (approx 75-100 words)
B. Select ONE teaching unit or chapter from the textbook and analyse the tasks, activities and exercises in the unit with reference to the literature on language teaching and learning.

The following questions may guide your analysis of the unit:
 What is the topic or theme of the unit?
 What is the focus of the unit? (speaking? writing? grammar? integrated skills? Etc.)
 What approach to language teaching does the unit reflect?
 How do the various tasks, activities and exercises relate to each other?
 If a reading comprehension or a listening task is included, consider how the texts, tasks and activities relate to the literature on teaching reading and listening
 If writing tasks are included, what types of writing are students expected to produce? What approach to the teaching of writing is represented in the unit?
 If speaking tasks are included, consider how the tasks and activities relate to the literature on teaching speaking.
 What grammatical structures and/or vocabulary are covered? What ideas about the teaching and learning of grammar and/or vocabulary are reflected in the unit?
Remember, you need to explain the reasons why the materials writer(s) have used the particular tasks, activities and exercises included in the chapter. To do this, you will need to refer to the ideas and concepts about language teaching that you have considered in the seminars and in your reading.
C. Conclude your report with a recommendation regarding whether or not this book should be used. (You can make EITHER a positive OR a negative recommendation).
Please refer to a minimum of 8 readings, of which four should be from the list of prescribed readings, and supply a bibliography.
