Public Health and Social Care
Task
Your (double weighted) module assessment is comprised of two sections:
·
·
Task 1: LO’s 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 This will require you to write a literature review (approx. 2,500 words) on a topic of your choice related to Public Health and Social Care/Early Years in the broadest sense. This literature review should feed forward to Task 2 where you write a research proposal. Your literature review should demonstrate skills in library searching, a command of the subject area and an understanding of the identified topic or problem. Additionally you should use it to justify your research topic, design and methodology. This is a chance for you to display your scholarly skills and broader reading around a topic.
Task 2: LO’s 1, 2, 3 and 4 This will require you to write a proposal for research (approx. 5,000 words) in which you will need to include the following:
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
· You will also need to clearly relate both assignments to the stated learning outcomes for the module N.B. Inclusions in an appendix will count up to 10% of the overall word count. |
Learning outcomes assessed
On completion of this task you will have demonstrated an ability to: RMPF 1 LO1 Differentiate between types of research (qualitative/quantitative) and their suitability linked to appropriate methodology LO2 Formulate a relevant, in-depth literature review LO3 Consider the appropriateness of different research methods and correctly formulate common methods (Questionnaire, Survey, Interview etc.) LO4 Effectively construct and address ethical issues LO5 Evaluate data analysis techniques
RMPF 2 LO1 Identify a relevant area(s) of practice which would benefit from further research LO2 Propose methodology, method, data generation and data analysis appropriate to the research proposition LO3 Effectively construct and propose ways to address ethical issues LO4 Engage in critical discussion and construct a valid research proposition applicable to a specific area of practice |

Task 2: LO’s 1, 2, 3 and 4
One of the key difficulties encountered by students formulating a research proposal is that it is often imbalanced e.g. a description of the problem becomes a huge part of the paper and this reduces the wordage allocated to the actual proposed research process. To this end the following word allocation is suggested:
The task requires you to write a proposal for research in which you will need to include the following:
·
A ‘Statement of Intent’ 200
·
Correct identification and construction of the issue(s) to be researched 400

A comprehensive and critical literature review (this may contain elements of
·
task 1 in addition to new pieces of literature) 1000
·
Proposed and justified research methodology to address the position you adopt 500
·
Utilisation of principles and rules governing research, research participants
and data (ethical issues section) 350
·
Proposed research activity (how you envisage the process of the research) 500
·
Suggested appropriate methods for data collection/generation (including
a justification for the proposed sample, access etc.). Proposed data collection
tools should be formulated and submitted in the appendix. 600
·
Identification of likely resources 250
·
Proposed data analysis 450

How findings might be dealt with 300
