The writer notes the difficulty of initiating change when the circumstances and dynamics of politics are ignored in an organization.  Though executive leaders are equipped to strategically develop “plans, structure, metrics and other aspects of hard change initiatives, they struggle when it comes to handling the emotions and politics that is often associated with the change.  The author states change can occur, these issues must be resolved.  Emotions such as fear and skepticism can produce failure for any change initiative.  These unattended emotions create resistance, disengagement, distraction, and finally burnout. It causes difficulty retaining high performing employees as they become stagnated and disinterested. A five-step process is introduced in this article to leverage emotions. (1)Mapping the political landscape, (2) identify the key influencer’s in each stakeholder group (3) Assess the influencer’s receptiveness to change (4) Mobilize influential sponsors and promoters, and (5) Engage influential positive and negative skeptics.
