An Entrepreneur

An Entrepreneur

1) Schumpeter describes the ‘entrepreneur as a ‘deviant’. How does this view of an entrepreneur fit with current research centered on and around entrepreneurial activity today? You need to bring together many academic themes, arguments and theories to make you work robust. You also need to conduct research and debates key areas so as to make your work ‘rounded’ so as to offer as many viewpoints as you see fit in order to back up your argument.

2) Present a critical review of the characteristics/traits of an entrepreneur with reference to at least three different categories of entrepreneurship which are viewed as legitimate by mainstream research. You need to debate how the different characteristics within the individual can affect the type of entrepreneurial activity they choose to enter. You can include a small amount of case study within this assignment, but this must NOT form the main body of your work and must only be used to emphasise the entrepreneur. (You might wish to choose between or include the “intrapreneur” “lifestyle entrepreneur” “social entrepreneur” “family entrepreneur” “webpreneur” “rural entrepreneur” “serial/portfolio entrepreneurs” facsimile/ second generation entrepreneur”).

In each case we expect reference to at least 6 key authors and their theories of entrepreneurship; these needed to be debated and argued fully to obtain an assignment pass.  These should be argued and debated through a coherent, structured essay. You may use a sentence or two of case study, to emphasise a key area of entrepreneurial theory as an example. The assignment should be presented as a scholarly essay with appropriate referencing, not as a business style report with short sub-sections and bullet points.

This additional material(PDF) is aimed to help you successfully complete your assignment. You will find that the papers are directed to both questions and the overall entrepreneurial debate. You only need to read the literature review. You cannot use all of them in 3000 words though so it is your job to be selective. You must NOT use your opinion, you argue through different authors’ views.

Both assignments should be no more than 3000 words in length.
