Essay
On June 28, 2018 the Supreme Court of Canada handed down a ruling on the appeal of Richard Suter. Suter is an Edmonton man who, in 2013, accidentally drove his car into a crowded restaurant patio, killing a three year-old boy. Suter then refused police demands to undergo a breathalyzer test. Suter was originally given a four-month sentence, but later appeals increased and, subsequently, decreased the length of that sentence.
For the written assignment, you will examine five newspaper articles dealing with this case and write a five page double-spaced essay (approximately 1500 words) on the case. What were the arguments on both sides of the issue? What did the Supreme Court ruling argue were mitigating factors in their decision to reduce his sentence? How was the case covered in the media? What role did vigilante justice play in these proceedings? Be sure to coherently outline how and why the case moved through the appeal process.
You can use five of these articles, or find relevant and appropriate articles of your own from reliable news sources.
