Critically compares theoretical discussions concerning justice between the past and the present.
If you were to opt for this question I would expect you to draw on material (and the corresponding literature in the reading list) from the sections called
Justice & Deterrence (Past)
Justice & Deterrence (Present)
Assessment criteria:
The artefact requires that you focus on one criminological perspective, addressing its early or original formation and its contemporary or present versions.
Although there may be variances between perspectives, as a general (rather than strict) rule you should infer ‘present’ to refer to theories/debates that have been advanced since the year 2000.
Be careful to not just describe the approaches you cover in your essay which involves offering broad overviews. Instead frame your thinking/discussion around particular factors, these may concern:
Changes in thinking due to different social, historical, social & political context in which each of the theories were advanced
Changes or advances in research method, techniques or approach
Changes in theoretical ideas (& what has prompted such changes)
The extent to which the approach is applied or theoretical
So ensure you focus the discussion of your essays on the similarities (or continuities) and differences between the past and present formation of the chosen approach.
